In the human body, the knee is the major joint that undergoes heavy stress since it acts as a shock absorber and withstands twice or thrice the body’s weight during movements related to carrying the body. As a consequence, knee injuries are not exclusive to individuals who participate in sports and substantial degeneration of the knee can occur even in cases of minimum strain to the joint. The knee joint is composed of the femur, patella, tibia and fibula. Articular cartilage covers the bones surface, cartilage tissue of the menisci rests between the femur and tibia, whereas the joint is bound within the articular capsule which is a connective tissue membrane. In the outer and inner layers of the articular capsule, there are ligaments which stabilize the knee joint.
