The ankle (talocrural joint) is the region where the distal end of the tibia (interior surface of the foot), the distal end of the fibula (exterior surface), and the talus bone (the junction where the two previous bones articulate) meet. The talocrural joint is falsely referred to as the talus.
The ankle is composed of an articular capsule and an articular membrane, and is bound by a solid complex of ligaments which increase the joint’s stability and provide adequate strength in order for the joint to perform the foot’s anatomical movements. Furthermore, there is a large number of tendons which surround the joint and extend to the foot or heel.
